Bryan the Beachmaster (known as The Beachmaster for short) is a enormous male Southern elephant seal and a major character from Happy Feet 2. He is the father of Shane and Darren and the current master of his respective beach.
Information[]
Happy Feet Two[]
Bryan first appears when Mumble, Boadicea, Erik, and Atticus try to return home from Adélie-Land by using a "bridge" that Bryan is blocking. He tells Mumble to go back, and when it's suggested that he back up, refuses: among battling male Elephant Seals, backing up is a concession of defeat. Boadicea tries to get past him, climbing up, then sliding down his back, but is slapped back by his tail. At this time, in an effort to get past, Mumble and the other kids get head-butted back onto the ice. Atticus tells him to apologize and hits Bryan's trunk-like nose, but gets head-butted back. He is first depicted to be "grumpy" due to his performance on this scene. Soon the bridge collapses under Bryan's immense weight and he finds himself trapped in a giant hole. Soon, Mumble finds a way to get him out of the ice by way of a Leopard Seal, after ice break he able to scare Leopard seal away which it swims away of fear
When everything is resolved, Bryan thanks Mumble for saving him. Although later on, when Mumble goes back for help from Bryan, he is yelled at and told to get out because Bryan is being challenged by another elephant seal named Wayne on his beach, teaching their sons Shane and Darren for defend and fighting and doesn't care about Mumble's colony dying. Erik then sings his opera and eventually convinces Bryan to come to save Emperor-Land.
Trivia[]
- He is voiced by Richard Carter, who also did Barry from the first film.
- Originally, he was going to be voiced by John Goodman, but he was taken down and replaced by his new voice actor, Richard Carter.
- His body is similar to Barry who appears in Happy Feet.
- The two share the same overall body color and voice actor.
- He weighs about 9000 lbs
- Bryan has two sons named Shane and Darren and mentions their mother, who is otherwise unknown. Given the mating behavior of elephant seals and his remarking "Goodbye ladies, hello lonely beach," it's strongly implied that he has many mates and possibly many more children.
- Bryan is one of the two seal characters to fall, after the leopard seals from Happy Feet Two: The Video Game. He survived this fall, but it is unknown if the leopard seals did.
- The 1995 movie The Pebble And The Penguin was also going to feature an elephant seal character known as the Beachmaster, but his scenes were deleted but extended. However, a song sung by him did end up on the official soundtrack. It is likely if this is a coincidence or not—despite having the same name and species, both characters have rather different personalities. The Happy Feet franchise has itself drawn frequent comparisons to the earlier film.
Quotes[]
- "Take your little fur-ball and fluff off or I'm gonna turn carnivore with a craving for a penguin. The only "butt" I wanna see is yours... walking AWAY."
- "What're you looking at?"
- "Notice, boys, the witty riposte as weapon?"
- "That's okay. I didn't mean that."
- "But see it my way, sport. One day, I'll be protecting my beach... and some pumped-up mongrel wants to take it from me. We're nose-to-nose. The whole world's watching. And in the back of me mind, there's this niggling doubt: I once backed up for a penguin. He'll see it in me eyes... and I'm gone. Goodbye, ladies. Hello, lonely beach. You with me?"
- "G'day, gorgeous."
- "No, thank you. Thanks to you, Chief, Beachmaster Bryan gets to play another season. I reckon that makes you an honorary elephant seal. What do you reckon, boys?"
